you need to check if the headphone is plugged in the right way and in the right place
also check if your volume is not on mute or if there is sound on your computer

So I guess that you know by now that you need to turn up the volume so I will cover a couple of other things.
If you are trying to listen to CD in the drive you need to make sure that the drive has a audio connector running from the back of it to your sound card.
Make sure your headphones are plugged into the correct output. Headphones are not amplified and will not work well plugged into the normal speaker output. Look for another line out jack that may work better.
Make sure that under the control panel, audio devices, properties that you hardware is not muted.
Well there are some others but they are a little more involved.
Try again if these don't work.
