My sewing machine keeps making big loops in the thread every few stitches. What do I do to fix it? What's the problem?

It sounds like your tension may be off. You don't say whether it is the top thread or the bootom thread, so I would check the tension on the bobbin as well as on the top thread.

Also, this sometimes happens if your needle is dull.

Check all the basics. Is it threaded right? Does the thread size match the needle size? Are you using the proper needle for your fabric? Have you blown out all dust and fuzzy bits? Have you oiled it recently?

If none of the above works, it may need to be serviced. That's not usually too expensive and can really extend the life of your machine.

Good luck! They always seem to have problems just when we need them most...

It does sound like the tension, but also check out this thread with more info:

(or do a search for the question "My sewing machine is making a mess underneath, what is going wrong? It is threaded right by the way?", from 3 weeks ago)

it needs to be cleaned out of any loose thread. Assuming you are threading it correctly it would only need to be adjusted by turning the knobs of tension and thread length. It sounds like the thread is all caught up. If you still can't figure out the problem just try to use scrap fabric on different settings.

Did you forget to lower the foot down onto the fabric before you began sewing? I've done that so many times it's not even funny...

The Tention is too loose, or the Bobin is too loose.
