Obviously the paper docs are valuable, Otherwise you won't be asking this Q. Therefore, here is a simple way to do it.
Wrap it carefully in a saran wrap, making sure there are no wrinkles. Place it under a bunch of heavy books. 3 or 4 telephone books, dictionaries or the like - leave it there for a week. Heavier the books, the better. This method should reduce the folds. There is no way to completely eliminate the folds in a safe way without causing damage.
Don't steam it.
Don't iron it.

This is a very dangerous process because it can go very wrong, hold it over steam, and then either iron it quickly or put it between two flat objects and let it dry. Be careful not to get it too wet to where the ink can run or be damaged by the on top lying object.

Iron it. Start with a cool setting, and if that doesn't do it, raise the temp till it does. Take your time, use the least amount of heat you can get away with.
I'd say start with a dry iron, and if that doesn't do it...use some steam as another poster mentioned.

Take the documents and put in large zip lock bag.Lay them flat under your mattress. As you put the mattress back down make sure that they are not curling in the zip bag.Wait a few nights after sleeping and then take it out .It usually works.Good luck!!!!

If they are very important papers, or any other documents, I would use an iron ( very low heat)
