My daughter really wants an African Butterfly for her 60 gallon freshwater tank. One pets store said they are freindly to tank mates, while a friend said no way her heard they will eat ANYTHING that comes near them at the top of the tank and will fit in their rather large mouth. She has a guppie, a catfish, a Farlow (SP), a sucker fish, bambooshrimp, flounder and snails.

If it will fit in his mouth the butterflyfish will eat it. In the wild they are predatory. Her friend is right and the guppy would be gone in minutes since most guppies swim near the surface

Actually, they recomend feeding your butterfly fish guppies. I would suggest some large bottom dweller maybe, or something pretty large.
