I've been told the reason dates back to centuries ago when women had handmaids who helped them dress, and it was easier for the maids to dress the women of the house if the buttons were on the left side.

So they can charge us more. The exact same man's shirt usually costs 20% less. By putting the buttons on the other side, we can't sneak a man's shirt into our wardrobe. I buy men's shirts anyway, they are a better fit if you are big busted and they are more affordable.

I'm pretty sure it's because it's easier for right-handed women to close them. Also, it's easier to just have one general side, so instructions for sewing and all that are easier to follow since the side will always stay the same.

Because traditionaly women had a ladies maid that helped to dress them, and the buttons were made for them to button easier.

My theory is that it's for when men and women hurriedly undress each other. That way they don't have to rethink locations, it's all the way they're used to.

because we used to wear our buttons in the back. it makes it easier for our men to help us dress if our buttons mirror theirs.
