Yes. But I don't think it's a case of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. Compared to a feudal system, the wealth is spread out much more evenly in America - and that is due to capitalism.
The biggest problem with capitalism and America is that all they think about is money. They (I use the sweeping generalisation quite liberally) only care about money. It seems Americans, as a group, have no real culture to speak of, no interests outside of money and consuming more for less.
Capitalism destroys everything that is sacred in this world - and on a grander scheme look at their focus on the middle east oil. It's ALL about money. Nothing else matters when Capitalism reigns.
It's sad, I wish they could see past it.

Capitalism can't go "beyond control". The mantra of capitalism is "all the market will bear" If someone raises their prices to a point above that that consumers want to pay, they go to someone with lower prices. There is always someone out there who will provide services at a lower price, not because of lower quality, but because they can make more money at the lower price. The problems come in when the government butts in and tries to regulate. Has never worked, is not working now, and will never work. The American people aren't as dumb as the government thinks they are.
Capitalism itself isn't evil. It's the people who try to take advantage of the system. You have those kinds of people in any economic system, whether it be Capitalism, Socialism or Communism.
As for "the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer" that concept means you believe that there is a set amount of money that is available, and for one to get richer, someone must get poorer. That could not be farther from the truth. There is no set amount of money, and nothing to stop people from making as much as they want to . . . oh wait, there are those pesky government regulations again getting in everyones way . . .

In the course of my job I interviewed someone who has worked for Delta Airlines for 19 years and got a 20% salary cut this year (all their employees did and lost retirement bennies, too). He was trying to be upbeat and not cast it in a negative light, but he was the father of 3 small children. I can't imagine the desperation that would cause in the family. It made me sick, you know the CEO of Delta probably got a big fat end of the year bonus.
Everything is engineered to feed Wall Street quarterly. It's crap.

All else being equal, there is nobody in the world who wouldn't rather be in the bottom wealth quintile in a capitalist society than in the bottom quintile in a non-capitalist society. So in other words, my answer is no.

That's what capitalism is all about, friend. That, and working for what you get.
