I know you'll probably say no, but to me, taking the chemistry aside, it is pretty weird.

untanuta...I'm pretty sure that I'd rather stand in a room with some salt around me instead of chlorine.

It's also strange that the only cure for a does of nerve gas is atropine - a deadly poison.

It IS weird but I'm sad to see you say taking the chemistry aside because thats what makes it interesting and explains the whole thing.

regards

Absolutely, this is weird. That is one of the things that led me to make a decision to study chemistry fifty years or so ago. I have been working in chemistry ever since I went to college (or maybe since I went to high school where I had a teacher who gave me the run of the stockroom) and in the interim, I have worked in academia and in industry and am now teaching high school chemistry. There are so many weird things in chemistry it is endlessly fascinating. We teach the fundimentals of chemistry to show there is some order to the science, but we also teach the exceptions to show how interesting it is.

The fact that table salt is made from a poisonous gas and a metal that is active enough to catch fire in water is the rule, not the exception. A chemical change changes the properties of the materials involved. Exceptions are to this rule.

Science is fun! and very nifty. A Scientist 400 years ago said the Sun was the center of the Universe, maybe he is right.
Maybe that harmless salt atom, and only that one,is the one ingredient that is needed by Emporer Ming to make the Universal Implosion Device, that would be fun to watch.
Science is as real as two or more agree on.And even that is a matter of debate. So yes, Science rocks!

Salt isn't harmless matey!

Isn't it weird that Sodium and Chlorine atoms can join to make something as harmless as salt?

No question defo says harmless as salt, i know what i said, can't see anything in that question about standing in a room.

Rory B agrees with me, i rest my case!

But salt needs to be thoroughly cleaned though. Only 1% of the salt is actually edible. The rest goes to things like spraying over the roads to melt the snow.

sodium has 1 electron in its outer shell and chlorine has 7. Things need 8 electrons in its outer shell to be non-reactive

Don't care much, I HATE the taste of salt, too much in food anyway.

salt is a necessity but not good on large scale so its not completely harmless!
