there are 2 generations. The first generation came out September 7, 2005. The second generation came out September 12, 2006, the difference is battery life, hard drive space game support, and a brighter screen.
On october 13th 2006 they introduced the "Product (red)" nano, every sale Apple will donate 10$ to help fight aids.

Yes, the new iPod Nano (2nd Generation) is about a half inch skinnier than the original Nano.(1st Generation)
The new one also has a sleekier skin type which greatly ressembles the now obsolete iPod Mini.
However, the hardware and the internal features remain the same.
The battery life is supposedly longer and the screen is brighter and sturdier

there are several types of ipods, im not sure if there are 2 typs of nanos, but they did just come out with the new ipod shuffle (the really small one) that might be the one your thinking of - hope i helped! - kristn4christ

Yes, i have the new one, the old one has kind of square edges and a mirror type thing on the back and the new have a rounded edge. The new one is also louder and improved.
