My van has 109000 miles, I have noticed that lately when the engine is cold, and I put the van in reverse, that I get a hesitation of a 1/2 second or so and then it goes into reverse hard? Any opinions on what to do and look at?

Time to service the transmission. But note this caveat:-----> Honda requires special HONDA transmission fluid. It will make a difference how the transmission functions, and how long it will last.
If your repair shop doesn't have the special HONDA transmission fluid, then be certain that he uses the special "Friction Modifier" recommended by all petroleum suppliers.

Fluid and filter change is a good idea and I would do that. Also before just going into reverse and waiting shift to neutral first and let the trans get ready to go for a 30 sec to 1 minute then go into reverse. You can also back the car in when you park it and drive out when you leave but still give the trans some time in neutral before driving off. This will not fix the problem but will extend the life of the trans.

If you have not done so already, have trans fluid and filter changed. This will cost about $200.00. Otherwise, if some slight hesitation in reverse is the only problem, leave it alone. The problem will eventually get worse, but it could run 50,000 more miles like that. Transmission work on that vehicle is so expensive, I would not do it until it becomes unreliable.
