The prefixes used for byte measurements are usually the same as the SI prefixes used for other measurements, but have slightly different values. The former are based on powers of 1,024 (210), a convenient binary number, while the SI prefixes are based on powers of 1,000 (10 3rd), a convenient decimal number. The table below illustrates these differences. See binary prefix for further discussion.
Prefix...Name......SI Meaning...................Binary meaning
K.........kilo...........10(3rd) = 1000(1st)........210 = 1024(1st)
M........mega........10(6th) = 1000(2nd).......220 = 1024(2nd)
G........giga..........10(9th) = 1000(3rd)........230 = 1024(3rd)
T.........tera..........10(12th) = 1000(4th)......240 = 1024(4th)

it's latin.
8 bits in 1 byte
1 kilo = 1,000
1 mega = 1,000,000
1 giga = 1,000,000,000

some of the answers say 1,024 instead of 1,000 because that is how Windows reads the data.
