Sure it can be cleaned up, except for certain types of crimes like felonies involving harm or injury to others. In particular, crimes involving dangerous and/or deadly weapons are difficult to "erase". Keep in mind that throwing a pebble at someone is considered a deadly weapon in many jurisdictions! Many criminal lawyers are criminals- they just have not yet been convicted. So, I'd say that with persistance, asking for a judicial hearing...your friend can possibly have his record sealed and/or expunged. It involves some procedures (legal) and then applying with the State Division of Law Enforcement.

Just curious ... how does one "clean up" a criminal background? Isn't it a permanent record?

Possible careers depend on the state he lives in. In Florida, for instance, it is practically impossible for a felon to get a professional license in ANY career. I think the only one left not restricted is Cosmetology, and that has been under review and may be changed. As far as a legal career is concerned, he can probably find out when he registers for the necessary courses.

it is possible, if all legal battles are finished and the he is totally honest with the judge and it is clear that no criminal behavior will continue with out the court's knowledge and consent. If the person is convicted of a felony and can't get it removed they will be on close supervision constantly.

I think it's something to do with equality isn't it, but when it's the legal field they tend to be a bit of a funny bunch!
