When I bought mine, the 20 GB Hard drive only had 14 GB of space this is cause of Microsoft puts extras in like gamer pics and themes on it. This dont take much space, but like a computer, the 360 dumps some of its operating systems into the Hard Drive to help it run faster. This would be why the drive has less space. If you want some space you can take some of the pics off of it.

There may have been a malfunction in the process of building it or the XBox 360 may have a 40G but just can't read the drive correctly

There are some videos on there as well that take up some space, just go to memory and select the hard drive and delete the videos. You do have a 20GB hard drive.

If you bought the premium edition, it is likely filled with content that M$ puts on it before boxing it up and shipping it out. Delete the content thats on there and you should have 20gb.
