There are a few spots of what looks like paint on a sweatshirt. If it is paint, would thinner remove it? If not, what would?

I did try paint thinner, but it did no good. I washed it, and letting it air dry on the porch. I'm beginning to wonder now if it's something else, like fingernail polish. Whatever it is, it's kind of rust-colored.

If your carefull at trying to remove it, be sure to use plastic gloves and wash your hand with soap after ward, avoid getting it in your eyes, dont put that in the washer but yes I have used this on my militray uniforms before and it worked, just only us as little as you need to get the stain out, try scraping the fabric, once you have applied the thinner with a wire brush, if you have one, it wont hurt to try, if anything happens it wont be worse than the paint

oil based pains normally contain petroleum based substance which can be diluted using kerosene. you can get some kerosene containers from local sports store for camping usage and try it on the stain..if the stain gets diluted ..then most likely it is oil based paint.. and some elbow grease with more kerosene will do the trick..the disadvantage is kerosene is extremely flammable and smells a lot..so you need to dab it on a piece of cloth and use the soaked cloth to clean dont pour the stuff directly on the stain....

you will need to wash and rinse your clothes several times in order to take out the kerosene smell.. there are odor removers such as baking soda which you can add with the launrdy detergent to absorb the kerosene smell ..

No Unless you do it in a very well ventilated area. Bleach in pure form (which is really only a few percent the pure stuff is a poison gas) will burn a hole in your clothes (that one I know from experience)

throw it in the wash and put some white vinegar in your wash as that's a great cleaner for anything.

Please be very careful! That paint thinner is flammable and could catch fire in your dryer when you next wash that shirt.
