The human kinds want to expand into new territories, as in the past Europeans expanded into America and Africa. As the population on Earth explodes, new territories are only in space, on other planets or other orbital bodies.

You cannot divert the money for the space program to end poverty, cure cancer, or HIV/AIDS. The reason for this is, it's STILL not enough money. In fact there will never be enough money to end these problems because the cause of these problems stem from human nature.
The majority of HIV/AIDS cases arise due to unsafe sexual activity, rape, or intraveinous drug use. You cannot irradicate any of these things. People make choices and tend to do as they please, not as you please.
In most countries, poverty is either inherited, due to unstable economies, corruption, drought, civil war, or illnesses such as HIV.
If you were to devote ALL the money from the space program to humanitarian efforts, you will save a few people but you will find your resources exhausted in less than a year and the number of people in need will keep increasing. The world population is increasing, decreases are only seen in certain countries.
The Space program has made greater contributions to human kind than you think, especially on the environmental front. Look it up sometime.

No, because it is one step closer to colonization of space. Without lofty goals how will science progress. And if we stop funding science were will people with aids malaria etc. be? Already they have developed a way to grow meat in a petri dish. How's that for feeding the starving.

Scientist are NOT obsessed with living in space. I know it was your opinion to think diffrent from my opinion, and I respect it. Scientist are trying to find a way, to connect to the space like we do with our earth. How would you feel if you were leaving a place where u spent your life....that kind of connection. They want to know what's out there for our own good...They are not trying to destroy it...and I personally think that they are doing nothing wrong about it...They are doing their job...
And i wanna do the same thing when i grow up.

You were either born without or have lost your sense of adventure.
There needs be only one valid reason to go into space, although
there are several that are as valid, and that is because it is
there!
MERRY CHRISTMAS and have a nice day.
Thank you very much, while you're up!!
