when the imac came out Apple declared the "i" in iMac to stand for "Internet". It was such a success that it has become their little trademark.

It USED to mean 'Internet' but Apple just adopted it because it made the product name sound cooler. Would you rather buy a 'Pod' or an 'iPod?' But by now they have overused it and it just sounds stupid.

Internet. "iPod" was a name that Apple initially registered for internet kiosks.
