We pay taxes for funding government expenses, like administration cost (senators, congress etc), army, social welfare and other services. Without taxes we wouldn't get central services, especially education, unemployment payment and others.

the first few answers were on target to the questions, the rest became political rants by people on the extremes. We pay taxes for a lot of services that some enjoy and others do not. Schools are mostly paid for by local property taxes with some help from the Feds who funnel money back to the communities but with strings such as you must teach this or that. Our highway system is here almost exclusively from Fed taxes, the interstate system is all Fed. Some of the social service programs are bizarre and might need a second look. Much of what we enjoy here is available because of taxes, local, state and Fed. Sure if you are a rich lib or conservative you will send your kid to private schools and write a check for college and set them in professions..but the rest of us who pay the most taxes need those student loans, health care, social security etc.

Are you for real? Don't you get your mail delivered every day to your house. The last time you took a flight, the Air Traffic Controllers made sure you Had a safe landing. Medications on the market are determined to be safe. The military protects our country as well as the FBI, CIA, Drug Enforcement Agency, Customs and Coast Guard. The VA takes care of veterans and the Social Security Administration issues checks to those entitled to them. The Small Business Administration helps small businesses as does th Commerce Department. The Department of Education processes loans and the EPA protects the environment. You need a lesson in civics to know what your government is doing for you and everyone else.

The taxes support road construction and improvements, libraries, public schools and other civic functions for communities in the country. It also goes for welfare and public assistance programs. We have to pay the taxes because the money for these projects has to be paid for somehow. Unfortunately, most of the projects get scrapped or short changed and the government takes our tax money for themselves in big raises and perks.

Why the current administration has given you a nice little war that you can call your own. What more could you want? Look up - or just watch the news - and see how much its costing every day and how much its already cost. I'm so proud my tax dollars are going to help kill innocent Iraqis, not to mention that its helping kill American troops and make widows out of a lot of wives. Lest we forget - a lot of children will never know their fathers. That should be enough for anyone. Your tax dollars at work.

You are obviously an intelligent person for asking the question. To answer, there is justification for taxes since the government does provide important services: think roads, military, schools.

But the more you think about it, the more you realize that so many things don't need to be provided by our government: schools, social security, medicare, medicaid, farm subsidies, corporate welfare, etc. So keep asking questions. Hopefully someday our govt will stop wasting money!

Provides roads, bridges, police officers, public parks, public beaches, government help in emergency situations - - - lots more than people realize. If we did not have taxes/government, we would be in trouble. True - things could improve from how they are now though.....
