Could be bearings as stated above, no problems there just annoying.

But could be one of your actuator arms.
Or a head rubbing a platter.

And this isn't so good.

Try putting it back or if you feel brave give it a thump and see if that helps it.

(No responsibility taken for broken equipment due to thumping.)

i wouldnt worry too much, hard drives are mechanical devices that spin at extremely fast speeds so after a while you will start to get a sound similar to what you explained
external hard drives will be louder than the internal models as internal drives dont get heard as much due to the fans in the p.c,were as the external drives are only surrounded by a case
i have a freecom 120gb external drive and this makes a similar sound to yours, the best solution is to defragg the drive every fortnight and do regular "disc clean ups"
i know its a annoying sound but drives will always make a certain amount of noise due to the way they are built
be worried if it starts clicking as this normally denotes a hard drive failure!
happy xmas

Is it a Maxtor, perchance? They are _really_ low quaility. Its probably on its way out. Usually those noises indicate mechanical failures. Hopefully you're still under warranty. Backup whatever you can to your local hard disk now!

think of of tricky drives as an previous checklist participant, different than the needle is below the thickness of a finger print and the disk rotates sort of 7,000 situations consistent with minute. in case you drop the tricky force and reason the disk to crack, or the needle to be off middle the records gets destroyed much extra each and every time you employ it. this is impossible to repair records off a thoroughly broken tricky force, your in straightforward terms wager is to run more advantageous records restoration utility or records restoration middle... the two certainly one of that are very costly.

Bearings are failing. Back-up your files now and get yourself a new hard drive!
