I have a friend who is a High School teacher and she told me that if any teacher says "Merry Christmas" in class he/she can get fired because that is considered as "advertising" the christian religion. There have been too many parents complaing about this so I guess schools have completely banned Christmas. I am curious to know who actually agrees with this? I do celebrate Christmas, I won't be offended in any way, I just want to hear from people who don't think the word "Christmas" should be said out loud, and why? If you don't celebrate Christmas why should you have the day off work then? I can't see how you can be promoting Christianity or any religion for that matter by simply wishing some one a happy holiday? You don't have to be a Christian to celebrate Christmas right?

The difference is between a teacher acting in his or her own official capacity as an official employee of the State in a public school saying Merry Christmas, and what they say on their free time. You can't have government employees (and a public school teacher is a government employee) promoting a Christian holiday in their classrooms because of church and state separation.

I might have agreed with you awhile ago that this is all very silly and that people should just be free to say Merry Christmas as they choose. Then I listened to a story on NPR's This American Life about a Christian public school teacher who encouraged persecution of the only Muslim girl in the class during Christmas.

It may sound kind of stupid to make a big deal out of this to some people, but to non-Christians such as Jews and Muslims, it can be a big deal. Whatever you choose to say on your own time though is up to you.

Merry Christmas!

I am a Pagan and even i see this as rediculous...

i do not care3 if folks celebrate any holiday that they want to at any time that they want to. the only problem that i have with the Christmas thing is the people that try to claim the entire season of holidays as their own. these are usually the "Jesus is the one TRUTH" and My God is the Only God" folks.

Jesus is not the reason for the season. he is the reason that the Christians celebrate Christmas.

Its because non christians object. Which non christians you may ask? I'll leave it up to you to research that one. That ruling is applied to a public setting where people are more or less prisoners and may not want to hear someone elses expression of religion. They may not want to hear anything but their own religion and its possible that all they want you to hear is their own religion but barring that they will be satisfied to shut you up. If there was just one religion that we were free to embrace or ignore and we all thought of each other as members in good standing of the human race we would waste a lot less time on such bs.
