This may not be in line with you're question, but since you got an answer I thought you'd like to know BMW was originally in the virgining aerospace industry in the early half of the century making aircraft engines, in fact the BMW symbol is supposed to resemble a spinning propellor.

They didn't begin making cars until 1928
