Yes, goldfish WILL lay eggs "in captivity" (I've seen it happen many times) and yes there are ways to tell if they are holding eggs, though it's not nessisarily easy and experience with goldfish anatomy, and YOUR goldfish's anatomy in particular, is nessisary.

When a female goldfish (presuming you know for sure that your goldfish IS female which is also difficult to tell) is holding eggs her stomach seems to swell as the eggs build up. During mating, the male goldfish will chase the female bumping her rear with his nose. This will be constant and often fairly rough until finally the female is so worn out that she releases the eggs. If there is not a male present, usually she will reabsorb them into her body and get rid of them when she poops. In rare cases eggs can become impacted... this can often be deadly.

Goldfish don't become "pregnant" since they are egg-layers. So there is no way to tell when your goldfish will lay eggs and if the male decides to fertilize them.

i'd call a pet place.....if she is then you need to get plants to float in top of the tank, so when the babies are born they can hide and not get eaten......call petsmart you should be able to talk to someone there
