An authentic DVD is not 4.7GB in size, the files you copy are much larger, typically about 9GB or more. Thats why those files need to be compressed and converted in order to fit onto a 4.7GB DVD+/-R disc. If you haven't noticed already though, a 4.7GB disc really only holds about 4.47-4.48GB, not the entire 4.7GB. In any case, like many others who has already suggested it, you need a DVD ripping program that will convert and compress the files for you, although I will say it is definitely illegal

go to downloads dot com and search for 'dvd ripper' 'DVD backup' and 'DVD copy' there are a number of free programs that you can download (avoid the free trials on paid programs - just go to astalavista.box.sk to get a 'crack' and register the software if you are not using a freeware program)

these dvd ripping programs will allow you to copy the dvd to your hard drive. The next step is to either remove the DVD extra features or to increase the compression so it will fit onto your DVD-R - and then burn it to your media. A number of the popular packages will do these three steps automaticaly.

Don't waste your time with compressing 8.5GB movies onto a single layer disc, if you are a quality fan like myself that is!
Buy yourself a Pioneer double layer dvd recorder from eBay for £30 and get some double layer blank discs.
Then get yourself 'Anydvd' from http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html
this will remove encryption before copying onto your hard drive. You must own the dvd's to do this.
Then you need to copy that file with your burning software or 'DVD Shrink'(no compression needed) onto your full size 8.5GB double layer disk! No loss in quality what so ever!!!
Perfect!!!!!

Use DVD shrink. It's the best program I've seen for high quality compression of DVD files. You can also remove unwanted video files, remove alternate languages and any other annoyances.

Some DVDs are dual layer (up to 9.2gb). you can use a program called DVD shrink http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/ to shrink then to the proper size.

Nero also has software called nero recode that can do this if you have the DVD files on your hard drive.

Dunno what you are copying with but a lot of software offers compression ratios. Use the softwares tools, help etc. and try to alter the ratio. It has to fit a DVD somehow its already on one.
