Men stopped wearing hats in the early fifties, afterr WWII, and the cool hats had had to be replaced by helmets and work hats. Women wore hats a bit longer until mid-sixties, and the burning image of JFK's widow wearing her hat through the tragedy just looked too sad and morbid. Also, there was a movement as a society to eschew old styles at the same time, and hats were seen as old fashioned, stuffy and stiff "establishment" adornments.

Yes, the fashion of hats changed in the 60's. While it is true that President Kennedy changed some fashions by refusing to wear hats, the fashion started to change before his habit was publicized. The fashion of women wearing hats, however, changed with the popularity of the high fashion bouffant hairdo, with heavy hairspray to keep them in place. The reply of the first e-mail response is just hilarious! Women did not stop wearing hats out of sympathy for Mrs. Kennedy. That is just nonsense. Of course, there is no such thing as the "greater Felt"; good joke, though.

Hats were the symbol of class distinction in the US up through the 1960's. The hippy movement disavowed class. After the Vietnam War, hats became a symbol of the failed and stupid establishment that started this dumbass war. Even Nixon threw his hats away.

Now, everyone wears baseball caps, if they wear hats at all.

Baseball hats make everyone look dorky.

When a woman wears a baseball cap, it means two things :(!) she does not mind looking dorky, and (2) she is having a really bad hair day.

In my memory they quit between the 50s and 60s. To me it was a style and a shift to a more utility oriented society. It still amazes me the number of people who won't wear a hat even in cold weather. I think some don't even own one.

Women, stopped wearing hats in 1963, when President Kennedy was assassinated. they did it out of respect for His wife Jacqueline Kennedy, who was the last American first lady, to wear a hat. Men stopped wearing hats in 1928, when the greater Felt, went extinct.
