Maureen, I would not risk it. Sometimes old Wives have good ideas. In this case, it was a way of not going wash on Christmas.

The OWT (Old Wives Tale) is: if it rains on st swithins day, it will rain for 40 nights.

I cannot find an OWT that links st swithins day (15th July) and christmas - most of these OWT's come about wheh natural occurances are linked to particular events. I find it hard to believe that it has ever happened that (in a civilized christian country) it has rained for a full half year, to give rise to this OWT.

the tale regarding st.swithens day is that if it rains on that day it will do so for 40 days and 40 nights. not heard the one about washing

I've never heard that one, but I do know you're not supposed to sweep on New Years Day or you'll lose everything...

I learnt that when I was young and have not heard any other version.
