Maureen, I would not risk it. Sometimes old Wives have good ideas. In this case, it was a way of not going wash on Christmas.

The OWT (Old Wives Tale) is: if it rains on st swithins day, it will rain for 40 nights.
I cannot find an OWT that links st swithins day (15th July) and christmas - most of these OWT's come about wheh natural occurances are linked to particular events. I find it hard to believe that it has ever happened that (in a civilized christian country) it has rained for a full half year, to give rise to this OWT.
