Unless it is an "unlocked" cell phone, there is no chance of it to work. Check if the system is the same (example: CDMA, GSM, stuff like that).

It all depends on if the cell phone can operate on the same bands as the carriers in india. Also, you will have to buy a SIM chip from that market and you should be able to use a phone that you brought here in the US or a phone you brought else where in the world in the US and other places.

A decent amount of T-mobile phones operate on the thrre major bands (tri-band phones).
