Wow that is a good question. I would recommend a good anti-spyware program. There are really a great deal of good ones out there too. I use zone Alarm Suite which is a firewall/ anti-virus/ anti-spyware program. But I usually go to Cnet.com and go to downloads. click on (to the left) click on (to the left) then under ratings in the middle of the results section click on they will give you the best that they have tested but remember on each system it may operate a little differently so try a few until you find one you like.

Ps you can also filter [all licenses] to get only the free ones. and many of the ones mentioned above can be found on cnet too

good luck

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

you need to buy a program for spyware. Get Webroot Spy Sweeper as it does a great job. This is what the computer store told me to get and I can see why.

I use Spybot and Adaware to remove them. I also use a program to prevent it from being installed in the first place.

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............

Pick and choose at least 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.
