Need an explanation of the "gap solitons" phenomenon in photonic crystals?

Can someone please explain to me (or direct me to a place with an explanation) how are "gap solitons" are formed in a nonlinear photonic crystals?
I need a simple qualitive explanation (no complicated equations) of the, in and out gap solitons ,phenomenon and bistability.

laws are theoretic, no gap science exists in the voids, making
it relative to the theoretical E=Mc2.
