I always heard that Virginia schools were very hard on their students. I didn't think so, but of course i never compared my school system to other ones. Here is the grading scale for Halifax County, Virginia.

94-100 A
86-93 B
78-85 C
70-77 D
69 or below F

Is this grading scale tougher than most? If so, what is the grading scale that you are used to?

That's the grading scale I used in Hampton Roads when I was a kid and they still use it today.

Common, yes.

Tougher? That's harder to say. A 95% in one class might be easier to receive than an 80% in another, it all depends upon the subject, and the teacher. When faced with a more challening grading scale, teachers will generally compensate by making the tests less difficult. Ideally, the grading scale should be suited to the rigor and format of the course.

When I was in HS, I had a chemistry class where 80% was an A, and that was not an easy feat, and others where a 95% was an A but where almost everyone received an A. In my college classes, there are no grading scales made until after all students raw scores are evaluated at the end of the course.

When I was in college back in the Dark Ages when we used to park our dinosaurs outside and let them graze while we were in class, it was:
92 - 100 A
84 - 91 B
76 - 83 C
68 - 75 D
Anything under that F

Now that I've been teaching, over the years its degenerated to:

90 - 100 A
80 - 89 B
70 - 79 C
60 - 69 D
Anything under that F

That rewards mediocrity - a grade in the 60's should NOT be a passing grade. I like the one that was in effect when I was in school. The one you show tends to be extremely strict, but even it is better than the one I'm forced to use now.

Well, I'm a fellow Virginian. The grading scale in my county is easier, as you will only fail once you get to a 63 in a course. But it is just as hard to get an A in my school.

Anyhow, the scale is certainly harder than that of most colleges. An A (or A-) is generally from about 90-100.
