Has anyone out there tried this (and should I)? How is it different/better than regular makeup, and can you suggest some good brands?

I use bare minerals. It's better than my old liquid makeup because it doesnt make my skin oily, and I don't feel like I'm wearing anything. It looks more natural, gives better coverage, and is faster to apply. It's really versatile too, if you want a sheer look you can get it, if you need more coverage, it's easy to get. I love that alot of people can't tell I'm wearing make-up.
Since I started wearing it about 4 weeks ago, about 5 people I hadn't seen in awhile have told me how good my complexion is, where as with my old make-up, if anyone said anything is was about how good my make-up looked.

It's nice for some people, but if you have sensitive skin it can break you out, which some people don't realize. Most mineral make-ups contain Mica, which breaks sensitive skin out. Just a buyer's beware.

I use everyday mineralogics foundation. Its really good. Very light, looks really really natural. I bought it off a shopping channel. It was £20 P&P was about 4.50. They give full product size generous pots. Not like sheer cover. The Brush is really gorgeous and soft.
