Celebrities are more in the line of entertainment, where as famous people would be on the line of a political leaders, artists or religion...basically anyone that had an influence on how this world/country came about as it is.

In my opinion, being a celebrity is fame, but with everyone up in your face and the paparazzi all over you. Being famous means that you have fame but it's more of a "quiet" fame, like fashion designers. (Everyone knows their name, but few could actually recognize them on the street.)
