I made a reservation at Kingfish in San Mateo through OpenTable on December 1st for 7:30 p.m. on December 22nd. We arrived for our reservation at 7:25 p.m., and were told that they had overbooked the restaurant and our table was likely not going to be ready until 8:00 or 8:15 p.m. One of my dining companions is diabetic and could not wait that long to eat. We informed the hostess of this and she just gave us a helpless "there's nothing I can do" shrug. Therefore, we let her know that this wasn't acceptable given that we had made a reservation 3 weeks earlier and told her we'd be leaving to look for another restaurant that could seat us immediately. She had the nerve to mark us as "No Shows" on OpenTable. If they had said it would be a 5-10 minute wait while they cleaned the table or if there had been space in the bar and they had offered us a complimentary appetizer, that would be one thing, but really! Am I wrong?

You should definitely complain to the manager. I've eaten there before and the service there isn't the greatest, but they really should've made every effort to get you seated or offered a spot at the bar or oyster bar while you waited for your table to be ready.

There is now way you are out of line! That is rediculous. That restaurant is a joke. You Should have talked to management immediately. To overbook is a stupid mistake by them to begin with, but then to make someone who made reservations 3 weeks earlier wait just as long as if they didnt make them is just a joke. Dont ever try to talk to the hostess. she could care less. Always talk to management. I would send in a complaint through their website and let them know what happen. They should do everything to accomidate you. THAT IS THEIR JOB.
Dont feel you were out of line. You have every right to feel the way you do.

Let me say it again...The service is horrible at that restaurant. No matter how good or bad the food is i would never recommend it.

Talk to the manager, it's all you can do. I will bet you he offers you some compensation a meal or some such thing. Remember 99% of the time hostesses are dumb as rocks and haven't clue how to act, are poorly trained, and as impolite as 90% of the youth today. Some advice your diabetic friend should do as all smart diabetics do, and carry a snack for such eventualities, and not have involved you in their medical problem to this extent. Yet another example of the loss of proper etiquette.
