Ferrets are extremely social animals, and most enjoy playing and interacting with other ferrets. Many ferret owners recommend owning two or three ferrets for this reason, but there is nothing wrong with owning one ferret, provided that it receives lots of play time and attention. Ferrets frequently bond emotionally with other ferrets, and bonded pairs are often observed to die just a few days apart from each other.
Ferrets have been known to play with household cats and small non-aggressive dogs. However, great care must be taken when introducing ferrets to any new animal, particularly terriers and other breeds with instincts for catching ferret-sized prey. Ferrets will normally not get along with rabbits, birds, rats, mice, guinea pigs and small reptiles, some of which would have comprised part of their diet in the wild, and so may attack them given a chance.

Ferrets are good pets if you don't feel like having a dog or cat running around your house. The only bad thing about ferrets are their coats tend to smell if you don't keep them clean. You will have to clean their cages every day if you want them to not smell. I have a friend whom had several ferrets when we were in high school. She kept up with their cages. Her ferrets had a gentle temprement. I think they make pretty decent pets. They're fun and they love to play Again, you just have to clean their cages often. They are omnivors (vegetarians), so you don't have to worry about buying meat or meat'like products for them. If you have a small apartment, you could even house and leash train them and they can chill in your place. I reccommend a small place just because of the fettets size and how easily they can hide.
Good luck!

cute, fun, time consuming, expensive, social, great pets, smelly if not taken care of properly, high maintenance pets, prone to many medical problems, loves to give kisses, some like other ferrets and some don't, some do well with other animals and some don't, expensive (yes I put this on here twice for a reason), short life span, great companions, engergetic, crazy (at least my one baby is), theifs, mischevious, great hiders, sneeks, a good pick me up to a bad day,
Oh my god, my list could go on forever. I love these little babies. I have five and want more. But please remember the negative parts of owning a ferret before going out and getting one. Not all people can handle owning one.

Very outgoing, energetic pets. However, they are a LOT of work. Even weekly cleanings do not keep the musty urine smell away.
If you are willing to put in the effort, they are worth it...just remember they live for up to 7-10 years.....will you be so willing to clean up after them and deal with the odor then, or will your life situation change?

Our friends have one and it has lots of personality, uses the cat box and is very tame. It plays jut like their cats do. Prior to meeting them I would never have thought of a ferret as a house pet.

I have a ferret, they are soo fun!! Alot of people don't know that the bad things they hear about them are myths. They are like any animal, they don't stink as long as you take care of them and keep them clean. They are smarter than cats. And they are only mean if you are mean to them. They have a personality of thier own and they are great!!!

I had two pet ferrets. I loved them, so fun and entertaining. We had one male and one female. They are quite cat like except more fun. Ours got a bit out of control with their stashes though. They hadn't been fed well before I got them and they had stashes of fruit loops everywhere. I had to sell them because one of my children and I became allergic. I really miss them. But if I ever got another one, I would only get one. They seem more interested in being friendly if they only have you to play with.

I have two Chica & Chewy. I love them very much. They are great pets, although they need a lot of care. Just as much, if not more than my kids. They are smell if you don't clean out their cage or live dirty in general. They need fresh food & water daily and need lots of time outside the cage to play and explore.

One getting under Michael J. Fox's suit in 'Bright Lights, Big City' and biting him in the *****
I don't think I'd ever go near one because of that scene alone!!!
I know people keep them as pets, and whether a ferret would really do that or not I don't know. But I know that the're wild animals, and that scene definitely gave them a bad name!
I make it a habit not to trust any wild animal that has sharp teeth & claws. I was bitten once in school when I was trying to weigh a lab rat. I still have the scar.

Ferrets are great pets, if you have time for them. they require much attention. They are very intertaining and fun to play with. But they can be aggressive if not given the proper attention...and even when descented...they have a strong odor.
