In the DC area we paid $150 for a pump-out.

Here's a very important thing to know: there are usually two different access points to a septic tank. One is a white pipe, about 6" diameter. It's called the inspection port. The other access is sized more like a manhole cover, usually square and concrete. When you get your tank pumped, the pumper is NOT supposed to pump out through the inspection pipe, although many of them do. There are jurisdictions where a pumper can lose his license for pumping out through an inspection port.

Ask some neighbors with septic tanks who they use for pumping and get some recommendations.

Depends upon where you live and what the labor rates and driving distance is. I had a house in the Colorado mountains and septic service was about $600 per trip.

I paid $80 last spring. But I had it ready to do. Had a cleanout pipe installed in the lid up to ground level so there was no digging.
