The word phonetic is derived from the Greek word phOnEtikos which comes from the words phOnein (to sound with the voice) and phOnE (voice).

Because Phonetically means as it sounds, the greek words refering to the sound of the voice has been used, thus resulting in the non phonetical spelling..

It's because the English language is derived from other sources that it's all strange with spellings!!

Because the "ph" comes from the Greek "φ" which is a bilabial fricative rather than a labio-dental fricative. What??? The Greek φ sound is made by placing the lips almost together and blowing, the English one by placing the top teeth close to the bottom lip and blowing. The two sounds have now been assimilated as the English sound, but, like a lot of things in English, the spelling preserves the original sound, which is useful for those interested in historical linguistics - like me!

At one point it WAS. The two parts of the word that are no longer phonetically written are "ph" and "cal."

Try making the"p" sound using alot of air so that it is plosive and hhh sound over and over really fast and you can hear how it morphs into fff sound.

The "cal" is still pronounced in very proper British english. American speech has done away with most of the extra work.

for the same reason "bonehead" isn't spelled phonetically. words are only spelled phonetically to show how they are pronounced. when you actually USE a word (whether that word is "phonetically" or any other word), you don't spell it phonetically. notice that NONE of the words in my answer (or your question) are spelled phonetically.
