I mean the role of the 2nd pilot.

For the German's and the American' they were Gunners.

For the British they were navigators and radio operators.

If I remember correctly, the role was to act as a navigator so the pilot knew where he was supposed to be going......... or also could be use to carry an instructor in the case of training aircraft.

They were mostly night fighters-the co-pilot handled the navigation/radar/radio, etc., while the pilot kept his mind on the acutal flying.
