Yes smoking should be banned in public places ( with the exception of bars and pubs ) unless they have a completely separate area with its own ventilation system. I must say that the health issue is what the smoking ban is all about. Inhaling smoke directly or second hand is a know cause of cancer ( carcinogen ). You are correct some of the stats you mention do not have anything to do with smoking but they also do not cause by standers harm. Inhaling second hand smoke does. This is a very complex debate but smoking is a choice made knowing the ill effects it can have so I feel non smokers should not have to be subjected to these effects in public places. I used to smoke myself if anyone was wondering.

Well, I'm a smoker, and I think we got to a point where it was pretty reasonable, until recently it started to go beyond reason. Places of business should be able to do what they want, and deal with the repercussions. Passing laws that say a bar can't have smoking is rediculous, because smoking pretty much goes hand in hand with drinking. Regardless, there is always the option for non-smokers to find a non-smoking bar if it's that important to them. As for smoking inside offices, I'm fine with that, in fact I wouldn't even want the place to smell like smoke. I don't even smoke in my own apartment, I go outside.
And obesity doesn't only effect the obese, we all have to pay for their medical care, which they all have a LOT of.

The problem is that you smoking in front of me (okay, bad example, I smoke) infringes on my right to live a healthy life. Smoking should be legal, but laws preventing exposure to 2nd hand smoke make sense.
Obesity only effects the obese. Same with cancer. Abortion, well, that's a debate. Drunk driving is illegal, so that's pointless to include.

If people choose to smoke, they should have the right to smoke. They should however not be allowed to sue a tobacco company. I personally don't want to be around smokers because it stinks to high heaven and I find the smell offensive to its very core. Being around smokers for too long will cause my chest to ache, so it does affect the way I feel. I stay away from establishments that allow smoking. They have their right to have their place too.

This is a tough one for me for I myself am a very heavy smoker. I strongly believe that we should not be deprived of our rights to smoke cigarettes. On the other hand, I also respect the non-smokers. What i do is i never smoke in areas with no smoking signs like in the office, public vehicles and try not to blow smoke in peoples faces. I try not to smoke near friends who i know do not. I respect them so they respect my freedom to smoke too. Freedom is not absolute. It has its limits but should not be taken away.

I dont think that the choice should be taken away there should be smoking places and non smoking places so that people have a choice which one that want to go to or which one they want to work in!

I don't care if smokers smoke, I just don't want them to poison me too. Why can't they stay away from non-smokers? they are always right next to us, and get offended if we ask them to please move or smoke somewhere else. They are very rude and careless people. it's their choice to smoke and I will never tell them not to because I don't like it or because they stink so bad, or because it causes so many horrible diseases and deaths, however, I don't want to suffer smoke related illness just because a smoker was next to me and was so inconsiderate.

I think we should burn all the tobacco fields and take away everyone's right to smoke, but I feel the same way about alcohol and caffeine.
