it depends on the people who were using it-- in Egypt it was used to represent the (P-----)man hood of RA- and gold and silver balls were hung on it to represent the castration he did on himself-euuuu. it was worshiped by the druids because it stayed green when everything died and gave them hope that the sun would return to them.
it is mentioned in the Bible- Isaiah44;14-15 Jeremiah 10;1-11
