Hi, I am looking at registry cleaners to purchase and install on my computer. The two top recommendations I've seen from "Ask a Nerd.com are:

"XP Medic" (this scan found 119 errors and is made specifically for Windows XP and cost slightly more than the product below).

and

"Registry Patrol" (this products scan found 162 errors)

Can anyone tell me if they know anything about either product?

As well, I'm squeamish about purchasing online and would prefer not to, but I have been unable to locate either product through local vendors, but each site has an option of paying through Pay Pal.

Does anyone know of payment safety through the Pay Pal feature regarding online safety? I have never used this before, and wish to look thoroughly before I leap!

Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

Have a wonderful day, too!

I use paypal often and have had no problem. However, be certain that the site is a legitimate paypal site. You can do this by making sure when it redirects you to pay thru paypal that the address in the nav bar reads https://www.paypal.com/ The key here is the S in the http address. This means the site is a secure site.

Also, be aware that paypal will never email you asking for your login name and password, NEVER. I strongly stress this point because there is a scam going around which the site looks exactly like paypal and asks for your login information at which point they steal it. People fall victim to this thru emails sent to them. The addy does not have the "S" in the http address. Paypal is secure and you have no worries there. Hope this does not scare you from using paypal, I am simply trying to inform you of possible scams to get your password and use your account fraudulently.

Please dont make changes to your system registry unless you are very comfortable with what you are doing. These are best left in the hands of a professional. Changes to your registry, even if made by software can be the wrong thing to do. Think before you make any changes to your registry!

Register with windows live help. it will do some checks on your XP programme...it's quite helpful.
Try downloading a freebee like SPYBOT...just make sure you archive until you get used to the programme so you don't get rid of anything you need. This will take care of ad and spyware. If you do an online free scan it will always find faults. There is a free programme called C Cleaner...it will do a registary clean and is swift. Paypal has had it's moments but should be fine...I've had some mails which are definatley not from them but they have gone straight into SPAM...always forward them to spoof@paypal. PS system mechanic has it's problems.

There is absolutely no reason to bug a registry cleaner.

Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Add this little program and you will improve to system as well. I run it every time I log off.

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free

I use XP Medic and I'm very happy with it.
And
Paypal is very safe. I recommend using the credit card option with paypal because it gives you the additional security of your credit card.
