Poll your guests and try to have dinner as early as possible. Ask each guest, "I was thinking about starting relatively early, When would be a good time for your?"
1. It will give more time to relax and chat afterwards and still get home before it is too cold.
2. There is nothing nicer than to be invited to a Christmas Dinner and have the Host actually consider when would be a good time for me.
3. If the guests go home relatively early, it will leave time for you and your mate to clean up and play a little hanky panky.

every year me and my family, have chtistmas diner at about 4:00 pm and it works out good becuase we always save time for presents after diner, of corse the kids get to open a few presents each, and everybody opens there stokings, and the relatives that come over for diner bring presents that we open after diner then talk!! its a great way to catch up on info! Merry Belated Christmas.

We eat at 1pm. About 3pm we have dessert, meanwhile my mom will make a sheppards pie with the left overs from dinner so if anyones hungry later on they can munch on that. It's all good.

About 5 pm. That leaves plenty of time for sleeping in (no kids in our house), opening presents, calling family out of town to catch up, get to the house for dinner, leisurely meal, then nice drive home looking at the decorated houses.

Our family usually tries to aim the main dinner of Turkey / Chestnut stuffing / sausagemeat stuffing / sage&onion stuffing, bread sauce, roast potatoes, sprouts, carrots, peas onion gravy, apple sauce & cranberry sauce for sometime around 1pm, followed by Christmas pudding & custard (or similar such substance)........... then have a "Christmas day tea" (or in more recent years when switched from my Grandma's house to my Auntie's house, a birthday party for my cousin's oldest son)............ for sometime around 4:30 - 5:30pm(ish) with stuff like sandwiches, cake, trifle, etc before clearing off home around 7:30pm

No, that's not true. My family used to have holiday dinners between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m then we would exchange gifts, then sit and talk and then we would eat again, have dessert, play games and then everyone would leave around 9 p.m. We had a lot of fun.
