I only know the gynecologist one, but they tend to be males, though if you look around you can always find females instead if you just insist on it. The men, though, tend to be extremely professional AND by law they have to have a woman (nurse, usually) in the room when they examine you, so that it is sure they are not doing anything they are not supposed to do... that should make you feel safer with a man. There are already answers on here about what the gynecologist does on the first visit, so you can read those too, but the general test is just a pap smear, in which they insert a small and warm device to hold you open (only slightly, feels strange but doesn't hurt or anything), then swab inside the vagina with something like a cotton swab. They usually examine your breasts (for cancer, etc.) on the first visit as well, but that is only an examination by hand, and its not scary (perhaps odd or uncomfortable at the worst). They advise you go once a year after you start your period. I've been probably 4 times in my life (now 30) not counting when I've been pregnant--so one year is definite if you have problems or concerns.

Gynecologists will examine your reproductive region. There is an instrument that is used to look inside your body, and another instrument that is used to take samples of the tissues inside. The doctor may also stick their fingers in there. It is not pleasant, sometimes it hurts. You may also need to give blood or urine samples. As far as embarrassing, that is up to you. Tell whoever you see that you are not comfortable with having other people in the room (sometimes a nurse or student may be there).
An endocrinologist studies hormones, and will usually draw blood. If needles hurt you, then that will hurt too.
Most doctors are male, but don't let gender be your deciding factor when choosing someone. Ask around to find a doc that is professional and caring. You don't ever have to go to either of them. If you are planning on becoming sexually active, it would be a good idea to find a gynecologist to discuss birth control. If you are pregnant or would like to be pregnant, you should find an obstetrician or certified midwife.

I can't believe some of these answers...
A Gynecologist will examine your pelvic area for abnormalities and perform a pap smear to check for cervical cancer. He or she will also conduct a breast exam to check for lumps or any signs of cancer. While the Gynecologist is performing the exam, there will be a nurse in the room. The pelvic exam & pap smear can be uncomfortable, but it is usually not painful. It usually takes about ten or fifteen minutes.
An Endocrinologist tests endocrine and hormone levels. This is done by drawing blood. One might visit an Endocrinologist because of PCOS, endometriosis or abnormal periods. Also, women having fertility problems may visit an Endocrinologist.
There are male and female Gynecologists and Endocrinologists. Their gender is not as important as their knowledge, skill and the level of comfort you have with him or her.
Depending on the reason(s) for your visit, other tests could be imaging tests such as an ultrasound, sonogram or MRI. The MRI is conducted in a hospital. These tests are non-invasive, and thus are painless, with one exception. There is an internal ultrasound which can cause some discomfort.
If you are scared, try talking to an older female ... like your mom, sister, cousin, aunt .. etc. - someone to whom you'd feel comfortable talking about this subject matter.
Best wishes...

Well, aren't you a nosy one? ... :)
Yes, a gynecological check-up does hurt, but it doesn't last long, up to 5 minutes. During a check-up it's best to think of something that relaxes you, and is not in any way related to what you're going through at the moment. It's best if a girl / woman visits a gynecologist once a year, twice if she is sexually active.
It depends on personal preferences if one prefers the doctor to be male or female; mine is male, but he's gay.. :) So I trust him completely.
