Woodpeckers peck at wood for various reasons. First off is fo foraging when they are in search of arthropods that are under the bark or that have tunelled into the wood, ex spiders, beetles under the bark, carpenter ants and wood boring beetle larvae in the wood. They also "peck" at the wood during the springtime in order to establish territory, some woodpeckers however found out that television antennae and gutters are more efficient at making sound... Then they also peck at the wood so they can create a proper cavity for nesting. Not every bird can do this so in subsequent years various other species may use this hole as a nesting site.

Wood peckers peck, or "drum" for 3 main reasons. 1. Looking for insect prey inside the wood (apparently thru sound vibrations),
2. To build or enlarge nests. 3. To announce their territory to potential rivals or mates. They don't always choose wood for the latter. We had a Downy Woodpecker on Riverview Farm that loved our metal down sprouts. The noise was impressive. Michael
