what are the odds of a person that is not rich to become famous?

It's happened thousands and thousands of times. Ya get "discovered" for something and you are on your way f rom rags to riches, LOL. I guess the best example that comes to my mind presently is American Idol. All those people who come forward to try their luck at becoming the "next big thing" in the music and singing business, are all just regular folks, with very ordinary non-rich lives. The person who wins, instantly becomes a "Star" and a celebrity
As for the odds, well, that really doesn't have a whole lot to do with them not being rich, it has to do with whatever it is they have in the way of personal skill or talent, and of course, whether or not they actually want to bring that ability to public attention. I am sure there are plenty of people with a lot of talent. but they aren't really interested in celebrity, so they do not come forward to try and market it. There IS no way to figure the odds of a "poor" person becoming famous, because we don't have a clue how many of them are out there with something that is marketable.

Unfortunately, for the "wrong reasons", technically speaking, the percentage of non-rich famous people actually surpasses the "over-exposed" minority of the world's few rich famous people. I'm speaking, of course, of non-rich people who daily get their faces plastered in the headlines, magazine covers, the nightly news, and the FBI Most Wanted List... i.e. the poor serial rapists, murderers, thieves, molesters, bank robbers, assassins, terrorists, con-artists, etc.

However, for the "right reasons", the odds for a non-rich person to attain fame is more likely, than say, one who inherited already established family wealth and fame, like the Kennedys or Duponts, for inherited wealth and fame usually is dwindled away, or not taken seriously by the "spoiled" descendent because they did not have to "earn" it.

Where as the non-rich person comes from the place of “depravity”, which actually stimulates “hope” and the ability to “dream” big dreams, thus producing a “visionary innovation” (like Walt Disney or Henry Ford), that is marketed or inspires the masses in some positive way, resulting in the reward of its creator with recognition, fame and wealth.

My advice: DREAM BIG DREAMS, DREAMS THAT NO ONE ELSE HAS DARED TO DREAM... AND DO NOT HOLD BACK.

I would say that odds are against for a non rich person to be famous in modern times but still it's not totally impossible.

There is other side of the coin that you might fine interesting that non rich people when get the notoriety the first thing comes to their mind is how to get rich!! We see so much corruption in our society is, to a great extent, a result of people wanting to be rich over night.

Your chances are greater than you think, but you have to be in a big city where there are scouts who look for new people for their talent. If you can play a certain musical instrument really good, for instant, you may be discovered playing in a night club. God sent everybody here with a certain talent, you just have to find out what yours is.

It is very possible - if they are willing to work hard. Bill Gates started off as an orphan on the streets and look what he's done with his life! So just work at it and I'm sure if you really want it, you could make it to the big names.
