I run windows XP service pack 2 on a packard bell imedia 4608 computer.
My computer keeps freezing, and all of my hardware stops responding. Nothing works so I have to perform a forced shutdown. When the computer restarts I send the error report, but microsoft has no fix. Neither does packard bell or intel.
I have tried rebooting the computer to factory settings with the disk provided with the system, but the problem is still there.
I also have a problem where the computer will just randomly restart while I am doing something.
Both of these problems are totally random, and are not linked specifically to any software package, and also happen quite frequently.
Please help...

P.S. My hard drive is nowhere near full and I'm pretty sure that I don't have any viruses.

Sounds more like a hardware problem to me.
The next time this happens, when you restart the computer hit del to enter setup and check the system and cpu temperatures. If either are over 50 degrees C then overheating is your problem. Check all fans are working, vacuum inside the computer being careful not to knock anything. If you have lots of cabling inside that is blocking airflow then tidy them up with cable ties.
Have you added a PCI or graphics card lately? - if so uninstall and remove it and see if the problem goes away.

Sounds like the hardware has a problem unless you have seriously messed about with the software. Take it back and get it repaired/replaced. EDIT: Hang on - if it's a brand new PC and they put in RAMS with different speeds then they are conning you. Some RAMS will work with different speeds but there is no guarantee, and serious manufacturers would never mix them. Is there something you're not telling us? Anyway - take it back. Open things up and they'll insist you've been messing about and nullified the guarantee.

Definitely run ad-aware se, if nothing else. If anything gets into the files that are making the pc run, it will do that. I get a blue screen coming up sometimes, and I'm pretty sure that I don't have a virus. The last time it did it, I had 6 critical objects that were all in the operating files.

Download Ad-aware and run a full system scan. Then delete all the extraneous files with a drive clean up and defrag the hard drive. You might have picked up a bad virus somewhere and that, along with too little free space, is crashing your box.

It sounds like hard drive has bad tracks, back up you important data and install a new hard drive then install windows and the rest of the programs one by one, do not copy every thing from drive to drive do clean installation only copy data you typed and saved.

There is probably a virus on your computer so get some good anti-virus software like McAfee security centre(it's really good!) Then defragment your hard drive by doing START- ALL PROGRAMS-CONTROL PANEL-PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE- FREE UP SPACE ON YOUR HARD DISK ( - means then do this)
Hope this helps

i have the same problem, here`s what i do, switch of computer completely and then switch it back on, once you have done this keep tapping your f8 button on key board, follow instructions on screen, total restore, it will take you back to the first day you bought the computer, then re-insert your start up disc, i hope this helps you and a merry xmas
