A lot of the answers to THIS question have correct information in them. You need to say what kind of chichlids you have in order to get the right answer. Chichlids are some of the most interesting fish to breed, but their habits vary. A couple of points -
1) if you want to breed them successfully, you will need for them to have a tank to themselves if you want the eggs/fry to survive.
2) you have been taking good care of your fish
I have bred several kinds of chichlids sucessfully. If you are interested, e-mail me and I will try to help, if I have experience with your type of chichlid

If you only have a female the egg will be infertile and so it won't hatch. Either it will rot or the other fish will eat it.
It does mean that your female is living in very good conditions though, so you're looking after the tank well.
But theres no point in buying a male until they have their own tank, because the other fish will eat their eggs; and all the fish will be stressed. The male would guard the nest and be stressed by having the other fish in the same tank.
Usually the male makes the nest, entices in the female, she lays the eggs then he fertilises them and they look after them. They are very attentive parents.

more than likely the oscars will eat the eggs, if the eggs make it to maturity, they will b eaten if u don't have enough live plants for cover. the gravel is the nest dear. lots of fish make nests. u do have 2 chilids right and lots of times the male sees to the nest and looks after the young in lots of different species
lol sweetie

Actually your question is not very clear! Do you have only one cichlid which is breeding? Cichlids normally lay eggs in a nest and then guard it until the eggs hatch.
