In all walks of life there are people who have remained single for one reason or the other.

I don't know if there are laws requiring marriage, but I suspect the acceptance of a common law marriage is much lower than in North America and the surviving partner may not be entitled to any pension, health or insurance benefits.

It is not obligatory in any country including India. What is obligatory is to make the marriage work by following the dos and don'ts established by the society and the culture.

Interesting and worrying, at the same time. you are using term -" obligatory " , this is the key issue. Niceities of law of the land might stand on the way of a functionally okayed relationship. things like heirship and so on in title disputes to property or claims for insurance and banking benefits can crop up to complicate a trouble.

Getting married is not the issue...Staying married is.
One can live together anywhere without being married...What is marriage ....a piece of paper acknowledging the vows of two people (man/woman)... That paper can be arranged through various means---- relationships cannot be forged.... anywhere..

If you are an Indian then the society will treat you like an outcast and difficult to change your image later. Don't try this.
