I haven't been to Seattle in 20 years but loved it and have been waiting to visit again. Now I have a 9 yo boy and 10 yo girl and plan to take them summer of 2007. I'm on a VERY tight budget so I'm limited to the attactions and restaurants I take them. I need help people! I will be renting a car. We'll go to Pikes Place (of course) - drive to the Needle. What is another "necessity"? Here's what looked interesting in the visitors bureau:

*Woodland Park Zoo
*Seattle Aquarium
*Bite of Seattle
*Underground Tour
*Ride the Ducks
*Bainbridge Island
*Gameworks
*Japanese Garden
*Bug Safari

As I said - very tight budget so I can only take them to a couple of these attractions. What do you think are the MUST dos?

Also - do you know of any hotels that are cheap but safe and close to downtown?

Thank you for ALL your help people! Sincerely.

Check out the Seattle City Pass. It gives you a major discount for some favorite sites and even a boat tour.

I love the Seattle Center because there is so much to do: Pacific Science Center, Experience Music Project, a small amusement park, a beautiful fountain and a great food court. There is something for all ages. If it's up and running, you can also take the monorail from there to the Westlake Shopping Center which is closer to some other downtown sites.

Do you have the Entertainment Book for your area? If so, there are great coupons for rental cars and guaranteed best rates for hotel across the country. If you don't have it, it is fabulous! My husband and I use it all the time, and have in just a few purchases made our money back. You can check it out at http://entertainment.com.

Hope this helps!

At the ages your children are I might suggest the Zoo. Now that might depend on how fascinated your children are with Zoo's.....The aquarium is another great idea for children......I also might suggest the Underground Tour. It would give them a good idea of the feel for how Seattle came to be the city ...
I do believe that taking them to Pikes Place will really be a great time for all.
Taking the Monorail from Pikes Market to the Needle might prove interesting and less of a hassle also. Take advantage of the sights under the Needle also.

If you are staying in the city, and it looks like you are (except Bainbridge) you can save money by NOT renting a car. Then you can spend more on entertainment. Plus you can avoid the expense and hassle of trying to park everywhere. It will be very difficult to park for some of the attractions you mention.

You need to take the ferry to Bainbridge anyway, and you can drive on to the ferry, but why not just ride as passengers?

Seattle has good public transit. You just need to plan. You'll need Internet access on your trip so you can plan out your route each day.

Bus routes, schedules, etc: http://transit.metrokc.gov
And the ferry schedule: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/

AAA's TourBooks are great for this. They're a great way to pick a place to stay as you figure out where you might be stopping for the night. It helps you get an idea of local lodging rates and so forth. Their maps are also a must-have. If you're not already a AAA member, I strongly recommend it; their roadside assistance might really come in handy some day.

You can catch the duckboats at the Needle. Just start at one end of the waterfront and meander down to the other end. Don't miss the Russian Yankee submarine they have there. The kids won't forget that one for a while.
Lunch at the top of the Space needle ain't cheap, but it's something to remember.
You'll like the city. It's greatly improved from 20 years ago.

I love Seattle. I liked touring on the waterfront, there was a lot to do there, you can go to the Aquarium, the Public Market, catch a ferry boat, and there are plenty of places to eat , such as Ivars seafood and even a McDonalds. Someone mentioned the public transportation, I found it to be great as I usually use it whenever I visit. There are several city tours that are great and I found them to be reasonable and worth it.

Go on the Water Taxi. Or ride the bus. It will be cheaper. I've lived in Seattle my whole life and the only places I've gone on your list are the zoo and aquarium.

Go to alki beach in west seattle.
go to innerspace skatepark in fremont.
Go to zumiez in southcenter
go totaco time. Best food i swear to god
Walk around downtown. There is a mix of ppl so be careful. Go to lolo's hair salon. I swear it's the best 206-349-3848 get an appointment
