This question shows the typical confusion about Macedonia. The asker doesn't know that authentic Macedonia is in Greece!!!!
(He probably refers to a small Balkan state that uses the Greek name Macedonia.)
Let’s start from the beginning.
Macedonia is one of the biggest regions of Greece. It is situated in the north part of Greece and it borders Bulgaria, Albania and Slavic/Albanian republic of Macedonia (FYROM).
The ancient Macedonia (or Macedon) was a Greek kingdom and it was in the northern-most part of ancient Greece, roughly the same region with modern authentic (Greek) Macedonia.
From the ancient Greek state of Macedonia, Alexander started his epic campaign of spreading the Greek language and the Greek civilization all over the known word. His campaign was so successful that for nearly 3 centuries Greek (Hellenistic) Kingdoms controlled Asia Minor, Middle East, Egypt and even the north part of India. The Greek language became international and a tool for the spread of Christianity.
In the Middle Ages Macedonia was a province of the Greek empire of Byzantium and it was later conquered by the Ottoman Turks.
Macedonia was liberated from Ottoman Turkish occupation in 1913 and since then it is part of the modern Greece state.
There is also a state that emerged from Yugoslavia and it is officially recognized by United Nations as FYROM (meaning Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). That country has no relation with ancient (or modern) Greek Macedonia but it is instead a Slavic/Albanian country. {The 55% of the population is Slav-Macedonians (of Bulgarian origin) and the 35% is Albanian-Macedonians}
During the communist dictatorship of Tito a great propaganda took place in that state. The propaganda tried to “convert” the mixed population to believe that they are linked to the ancient Greek Macedonians and that they need to take real Macedonia back from Greece.
The propaganda has worked on some on the Slavs and some (thank God only few fanatics) actually believe that they are true Macedonians and although they speak a Slavic language and they are part of the Slavic culture they actually believe that they are not Slavs!!!!
The name that the country is using for itself is actually Makedonija but they are using internationally the Greek name Macedonia and a lot tend to confuse the Slavic/Albanian state with Greek Macedonia
{A lot of people don’t know that the international name of a state is decided by international law, international agreements and treaties under the authority of United Nations! You can not choose what ever name you like for international use! An example is what happened to Austria! After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and from 1918 it was known as the Republic of German-Austria (Republic Deutsch-Osterreich), but the state was forced to change its name to "Republic of Austria" in 1919 peace Treaty of Saint-Germain! After the war every state that wishes to enter the United Nation had to make sure that its international name wasn’t violating the interest of any other country and was not against international law!
This is the case for Makedonija (Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia). It can use its own name (Makedonija) but for international use it has to follow the UN resolutions!}
Of course the government of FYROM (Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia) has clearly stated that they are not linked to Greek Macedonia and Alexander the Great and is still doing a great effort to stop the few fanatics from compromising the stability of the new state.
Here are some official statements from the Government of FYROM (Makedonija or Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia)
Here is what the first President of FYROM (Slav Macedonia), Kiro Gligorov said: “We are Slavs who came to this area in the sixth century ... we are not descendants of the ancient Macedonians" (Foreign Information Service Daily Report, Eastern Europe, February 26, 1992, p. 35). Also, Mr Gligorov declared: "We are Macedonians but we are Slav Macedonians. That's who we are! We have no connection to Alexander the Greek and his Macedonia… Our ancestors came here in the 5th and 6th century" (Toronto Star, March 15, 1992).
On 24 February 1999, in an interview in the Ottawa Citizen newspaper, Gyordan Veselinov, FYROM'S Ambassador to Canada, admitted, "We are not related to the northern Greeks who produced leaders like Philip and Alexander the Great. We are Slav people and our language is closely related to Bulgarian." He also commented, “There is some confusion about the identity of the people of my country".
(Even the Slav-Macedonian archaeologist Bajana Mojsov told in The World Today (BBC) the symbolic weight attached to the Vergina Star was archaeologically absurd - but politically inevitable.
"The star of Vergina applies to the 3rd Century BC northern Greece - a very different situation, not related to the 21st Century AD.

Also the Slav/Albanian republic of Macedonia is negotiating with Greece (under the UN authority) for an international name that will not insult the Greeks and will not have any claim against Greek Macedonia.
And that my friend is the simple truth.
I hope this answer had helped you to understand that it is a United Nations resolution that forces Greece and Slavic/Albanian-Macedonia to negotiate for an agreed international name!
(The name of the state remains as it is “Makedonija” and no one has ever asked for its change!)

The Greeks say historic Macedonia is interior their borders, and therefore, the Republic of Macedonia should be brought about something else. Macedonia comes from Yugoslavia. The call the UN has Macedonia registered is Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. also, Greece did not like that Macedonia had successionist language, for particular aspects of northern Greece, in its structure.

Noone is afraid of the Skopians!
It is just unfair stealing your history.
If you are an american just think of this:
one day Mexico is getting destroyed because of their bad political situation and it is getting seperated in small tiny countries.And the northern part (close to the borders of USA) says to the whole world:"We are going to be named "Texas" ".
How are you going to feel about it?
Do you know something?I live in Greece and I really do not know the history of USA or Mexico and I might believe whatever the others tell me.
That is exactly what they try to do!The whole world doesn't know the Greek history and they say to everyone that their country should be named Macedonia.
It is really funny for someone who knows history but it is still a stealing.
That is why we have a problem with them.
From the other side,it is just a small country with poor people who they should better solve their everyday problems.We could support them.
