I would definitely recommend a Dyson. You could go with the Dyson DC15 the Ball All Floors, although if you're dealing with pet hair, I would go with the DC15 the Ball Animal. Both have a motorized brush bar that improves pickup on carpets and Brush Control where you can turn the brush bar off at the push of a button to protect hardwood floors and delicate rugs. By the way, with the Dyson suction power, you will be vacuuming up pet hair that you never knew you had. I was amazed.

I use a dyson on my floors and it works wonderful, though i don't use the power head on the hard wood floors and the rotation on the brush can cause damage but the normal head that comes with it is fantastic.
Some vaccums have ranges where they are suited for pet hairs I am not sure about dyson as I don't have pets in the house, but with 2 girls in the hosue with long long hair it helps to have a good vaccum and my choice is dyson!

The best way to clean a hardwood floor is not to vacuum it. The beater bar could damage the flooring. Sweep with microfiber mop. The best vacuum for pet hair I have found is one that has a canister to catch the hair. you can easily dump it out instead of having to mess with bags, and vacuum every day when the pets are shedding. Vacuum forward/backward and then go cross ways.

Sorry but i have to tell you that I have gone thru some vacuums. They all give out on me because I have to vacuum often. I have three cats and my husband and I are allergic to them. I know it sounds retarded that we have them, but they are like our kids, so what. I know this is over your budget, but my DYSON! OMG I love this vacuum. My dad bought some rainbow vacuum for like $1300, and my Dyson does a better vacuuming job than it does. It may cost $450, but take it from a person that has gone through about 10 vacuums. IT IS WORTH IT!!!

Oreck XL21 is great for this type of situation. It will switch from carpet to wood with no problems and is very light. The pet hair and pine needles disappear and has no loss of suction. I would recommend it highly.
