we have middle names to seperate people. it also can let a family name go on, kinda what last names do. your middle name makes you different than someone with your same name. ex- Sue Marie Holler is different than Sue Lou Holler.

Don't know. It seems possible that middle names got started as a custom because there was more than one person with the same first and last name already living in a place so somebody thought up a way to get rid of the confusion that would come up when the same named people did anything and other people wanted to talk about it.

There are a lot of John Smiths in this world. Even tho there may be a lot of John Wayne Smiths in this world there are definately few JWS than there are JS. My first name is John. This is probably one of the most popular first names ever. My middle name is Mark. Another popular name. I go by both, John Mark. In this town I live in there are MANY Johns. But as far as I know I am the only John Mark. Plus ... middle names were invented for mothers. Everytime my mom got mad at me I knew I was in big trouble if she sternly said JOHN MARK!!!

hmm i agree with fawn..i think the reason for middle names is that there may be people with the same first and last name,and to avoid confusion with the population that has ur same full name.They can also be to define the person with character.etc...im not Einstein! {coughs}

More important - why do chinese have only 4 letter names - with 2 billion people they sure must have a lot of redundancy

At one time I would say that it increases ones individuality. But in the U.S.A. a social security number does that for us.

-So our moms can use both when they're REALLY mad
-So people can tell the difference between "mary" and "mary louise"
-cuz our parents couldn't decide between two names so they decided on giving us both.
-cuz they're fun.
