It teaches the child responsibility. Being a teen is a transitional time. One is not a baby but one is not an adult. A teen has more privileges than younger children; however a teen is going to be accountable for his/her actions.
Parents will negotiate with their teen. Parents still need to provide food, clothing, and necessities of life but may require the teen to provide the more expensive varieties. For example, my daughter wants a cellphone that costs $100. I will only buy her a $50 phone. If she wants the more expensive one, she will have to pay the difference herself.
I have found that teens will appreciate items purchased with their hard earned money more than if mom or dad gets it for them.

Because children of today are more independent than years ago. They also like to have sufficient spending money, in order to do the things they love to do. Almost everything that's entertaining to teens now-a-days costs money, and their parents have to be pretty "well off" to be able to afford everything.

My daughter is in high school and works TWO part time jobs. She does it partly to get out of her dad's house, and mostly for the spending money. Alot of parents these days can't afford to keep their kids in the brand names they want and put gas in their own vehicles, let alone the kids vehicles just for them to ride the roads. Most importantly, though, having a job teaches the kids responsibility.

Heres some factors from my point of view...
-Money
-Cellphones
-Clothes
-Dates
-Boyfriends/Girlfriends
-Clubbing
-and the really savvy ones do HOLIDAYS
Lots of teens no longer feel that the parents "allowance" is sufficient for them and they really don't want to be controlled by what their parents say they can or can't have...so solution? Hey, I make my own money and spend it how I want
