"Other than not wanting to be killed and the fear of god or legal punishment, there really is no reason is there?"
No, absolutely not. Murder (which is separate from killing, which happens every day) is wrong because we are all human beings. The US Constitution guarantees the right to life not because they believe it in God's name or law, but because they believed in the right of human beings to live. You would have to have NO respect for ANY human beings to murder ANYONE. Do you even have a conscience? Ever met an atheistic humanist? Ask them why it's wrong to murder.
If you have a mother, a wife, a brother, a best friend, imagine someone murdering them, just because. It would be as innocent as killing a cow, yes?
No. Human beings are, like it or not, superior to cows, mosquitos and flowers. We are capable of rational thought, we are sentient beings that can feel and emote. We know that it is wrong to kill another human being (though we do it anyway, another topic entirely).
Murder is wrong because we know it's wrong. How did it become a part of legal and religious law if human beings didn't collectively believe it was wrong to begin with?

why is it considered wrong to kill people? "CIVILIZATION". Its all cultural teachings - this is the way which society has brought us up over the many years. Our ethics and morals are passed onto us from our ancestors - and the recognization that universal acceptance of killing would quickly turn the world upside down has been around for quite some time. It is all SOCIETY enforced.... if the majority of populations did not consolidate to setup a legal system that represented the majority of the people, and did not setup reprocussions/justice to deter such actions - the people who committed the acts would likely still become social outcasts. It is against the morals and ethics which we (hopefully) have been taught. When we were neanderthals and cavemen "the strong survive" applied, and social judgement was likely not a concern to those who may have killed other humans to survive, or to establish dominance. As for contemporary society - there are other methods now in which "the strong survive" and is majorly economically based - money drives the world today. The world would not be where it is today (whether you consider that a good, or bad thing - is a topic in itself) and we would not be as advanced as we are if such destructive behavior was allowed.
As for the killing of cows or flowers (..screw mosquitos. I hate 'em anyways.) : the reason humans are "at the top of the food chain" is because we're such a resourceful species. We always have been - similar to how we're now destroying our enviroment in the name of capitalism - we're just making use of the resources which are around us. Though NOW we're likely taking more from the earth than we need - only recently have we begun such behavior. Before this - such destruction of resources was "nature" - done out of neccesity, to survive...
Civilization deters the destruction of human life, but thrives on the destruction of all other resources. We are civilized people.

Humans are acknowledged as "sentient beings", meaning we have minds, consciousness, and souls. A cow or mosquito is not programmed as we are. To kill a human being, without giving that person a chance to at least say his prayers before going, is a horrible thing. The Bible tells us that, until Noah, people were vegetrians, but after the flood, people were allowed to eat meat. God had His reasons for doing it that way, but primarily, People are created to be in charge of the earth and all that it contains, and to help each other to serve Him.

I think NOTHING that we think they are Good or Bad Can be proved if they are good or bad. But if we say that we can do everything because we can't prove that somethings are wrong, that won't be life you know.Cause we have to CHOOSE between the things we can do.Sure we can kill people.and we can't prove that it's right or wrong. But for me,I know that I love people,So I don't want to do something against them, So I'll never kill a human until I HAVE to.LOVE is something inside humans. It's not important if you have problems with some one or you hate him,Humans always Love each other because they are ONE,even if they hate each other for some reasons, they still love each other from inside and that makes them hate themeselves when they kill each other even if it be out of their control. The other reason is that I don't wanna be killed. And if I let myself killing another man,it means that I let him kill me.There are other reasons for sure(for example because the God has asked us not to)
Wish it helped;)

To take away life of any one is wrong but to kill a human being is perhaps the most cruet thing of all. Human life is rare because from the evolution stand point as well its the ultimate stage and because of the free will only human has the capacity to liberate himself from the bondage of the rebirth or the cycle. Now, when he cut short his life and send him back with no assurance that he will be born again as human we are taking away his only chance for liberation. I think that's the highest act of cruelty you can commit.

When Jesus spoke with the roman centurion ( a Roman soldier) he didn't say anything to him about killing. Jesus describes him as a man of great faith. In the bible, there is a difference between killing and murdering. It is unjustified killing, murder, that is wrong. Animals, from a secular or religious standpoint, are designed to be food for us, so we are justified in killing animals in most cases.

Well, it is wrong to kill a cow and a mosquito and every other animal, to me, it's the same as killing people.
But, imagine if someone killed you parents, or your kids, or your sweetheart, or your cat, and you will understand why it is wrong.

Human beings are born with a built-in moral guidance. Later on in life they may lose that depending on events etc. If you kill it makes you a murderer. You would be killed in...say.. revenge but that person would be a murderer too. It would be a horrible cycle. It goes against mans very nature and therefore would be on his concience with guilt till his death because that persons blood would be on your head, figuritively. God didnt make us murderes, man has done that all on his own
Merry Christmas

KARMA! What goes around, will definitely come back around!
Don't even think about it! Yes, there are some people that we have all probably thought about wanting to kill at one time or another, but be the bigger person and let it go. Turn the other cheek, so to speak. Keep away from negative energy and negative thoughts. Negativity breeds negativity.
